So I some how lucked into getting the Flex Gumbo Max Preview a couple of weeks ago. I am not sure if I am suppose to say who it was, so I won’t, and no I can’t get you one.
So, I working on a Flex application for a startup here in Austin that when finished will, eventually, be installed 500,000+ times, once everyone upgrades to the latest version of our software.
I am very impressed with Gumbo so far. Lately, I have been using the new states, and man does Gumbo make this simple. I don’t know about you, but using the old states was very very confusing if doing any large project. The ‘includein’ and groups make things kind of fun and fast. Things like width.state1=35 and width.state2=300 make Gumbo’s states a joy.
Code hinting in the latest FB has a wow factor as well, easy to read and nice to look at, though it may be just because I am on a Mac now with the latest OS.
The only issues I have had so far are their seems to be bug where when you don’t manually type the import in for a class you are using it sometimes removes some of current import statements. It happens randomly. The only other issue is a picnic (problem in chair not in computer) problem, though maybe that should be picnis, as we are talking software not computers. The issue is the namespaces. I have read Adobe’s docs on this, but with a quick glance its a little difficult to understand and I haven’t had time to research deeper. Plus, I always found namespaces a little daunting.
Also I am hoping to eventually install the Flex framework stuff on all 500,000+ users computers so I can decrease the download time in the future for all of our Flex based apps. Guess maybe Adobe would want me to say Flash apps since they are moving away from the Flex branding.
If you can get your hands on a Preview I suggest doing so. Just jump in and go to town.
