I was going through some old emails and found an idea I had back in 2002. I was originally trying to find my idea that was identical to Facebook from when I was in college back in 2000. Yes, I said it. I had the idea for Facebook before Mark was probably in middle school. Back then I wasn’t much of a developer so I was trying to talk my neighbor, German Sosa, into programming it for me. He didn’t have the time, so I abandoned the college student portal. Yes, I said portal. That was about as social as it got back in those days.
Anyway, here is some text from an email I had sent to an old director from when I work for a telecom company. I was trying to get him to help me out as he was working on a somewhat related marketing communications effort. I think some company not to long ago got funding for this also. The details are little rough and my numbers might have been off, but at this point is was just the idea. (If anyone doubts I would be happy to post or show the original email.)
Here is what I am working on to get some cash flow:
What I am going to do is put up a website that will list the top dance clubs and bars in the Dallas area. With the assistance of Sony/Ericsson cell phones we will be taking images with the new image ready phones sending the images to the website where they will be posted automatically through an email from the phone. With the images we will be posting drink specials, guy/girl ratios, …etc so that people can go to site to see where the happening place is instead of going from bar to bar paying cover each time to find the hot spot. We will also send out text messages from the website to cell phones to notify site members where the hot spot is incase they cannot get to a computer. All this info will be updated every thirty minutes. We will make money on charging bars and alcohol companies advertising fees and sponsorship fees. We may also charge members $10 a year after we reach 10,000 members. We may also charge bars $200 for a text message advertisement to all 10,000 members. So say a bar has no customers on a Thursday night they can send out a text message to all 10,000 members that they are giving away free drinks for the next hour in order to get people into there bar/club.
